Hello, my name is Louise Mitchell. I am a qualified speech & language therapist with 10 over years of clinical experience. I completed my training at the university of central England in Birmingham. Since graduating from university I have worked for the NHS in Kent and in Buckinghamshire in a variety of different settings with Children with a wide range of different needs.
I have worked within language departments for children with language disorders, departments for children with autistic spectrum disorders, specialist schools for children and young people with moderate and severe learning difficulties and community clinics with children with speech difficulties, feeding difficulties, late talkers, children with stutters and children with social communication difficulties. I have also worked very closely with consultant paediatricians in establishing an appropriate diagnoses when necessary.
Since qualifying I have attended many courses to expand my knowledge and skills. I am trained in using:
- Derbyshire language scheme.
- Makaton signing.
- Picture exchange communication system (PECS).
- Hanen.
- Intensive interaction.
- SCERTS
- Talk tools.
- Dysphagia (paediatric feeding and swallowing)
I am able to provide full speech and /or language assessment and packages of therapy to support the areas identified through analysis of assessment results.
I have developed my specialism in working children with autistic spectrum disorders offering support to the families and education staff to ensure these children and young people are given the best possible opportunity to fulfil their potential. However, I also offer therapy to children who are:
- Finding it difficult to play.
- Finding it difficult to keep their attention on activities.
- Late talkers (not using words to express their needs by the age of 18-24 months).
- Making errors with their speech or are difficult to understand.
- Finding it difficult to understand instructions.
- Stammering.
- Finding it difficult to talk in sentences.
- Finding it difficult to use their language to be sociable and make friends.
I work with children and young people from the age of 2-16 but am happy to discuss children/ young people outside this age range.
